The Power of Collective Action and Shared Destiny

By Seth J. Katzen, President & CEO of Jewish Federation of Delaware

Each year as we gather around our Seder tables, we retell one of the most enduring stories of the Jewish people. The Passover narrative is more than a recounting of ancient history—it is a timeless reminder of resilience, liberation, and our collective responsibility to one another. Pesach calls us to remember where we came from, to honor those who walked before us, and to ensure that future generations can celebrate their heritage in safety and with pride.

This year, as we prepare for the holiday, we also reflect on our deep and unwavering connection to the State of Israel and our global Jewish family. Passover speaks to the very soul of the Jewish journey—moving from oppression to freedom, from uncertainty to community. That same spirit animates our relationship with Israel and shapes the work of the Jewish Federation of Delaware every day.

Our Federation’s support for Israel spans decades, and its impact is felt in profound and tangible ways. Through our longstanding partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), and World ORT, we help ensure that Israelis of every background and circumstance have access to essential services, educational opportunities, and a strong support network. These organizations are lifelines for vulnerable populations, new immigrants, seniors, people with disabilities, and families facing hardship.

Our commitment is also expressed through our Partnership2Gether relationship with Mitzpe Ramon. This people-to-people connection fosters shared learning, cultural exchange, and meaningful relationships between our Delaware community and our friends in the Negev. Whether through teen exchanges, joint learning initiatives, or community development projects, this partnership reinforces what it means to be one global Jewish family.

In times of crisis, Federation’s role becomes even more urgent. When Israel faces security threats or emergency needs, our community consistently steps forward by responding swiftly through financial support and other rapid-relief efforts. These funds support trauma services, relocation assistance, emergency medical care, counseling, and countless programs which help Israeli families rebuild and recover. Our community’s generosity has made Delaware a strong and reliable partner in moments when Israelis need us most.

Passover reminds us that every generation is called to see itself as part of the story. That call is as relevant now as ever. By supporting Israel through Federation, we ensure that Jews everywhere can live freely, openly, and with dignity. We strengthen the global Jewish community, preserve our traditions, and uphold the values that have sustained us for thousands of years.

As we dip karpas, ask the Four Questions, and open our doors to Elijah, let us remember the power of collective action and shared destiny. May this season of freedom inspire us to deepen our compassion, strengthen our bonds with Israel and each other, and continue building a Jewish future rooted in unity and promise.

From my family to yours, I wish you a meaningful, joyful, and liberating Passover. Chag Pesach Sameach.
