A New Year, A Stronger Community

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and welcome the year 5787, we are reminded that the High Holidays invite both reflection and renewal. They call upon us to look honestly at where we have been, envision where we hope to go, and commit ourselves to the work of building a stronger future. For Jewish Federation of Delaware, this season is an opportunity to reaffirm our mission: strengthening Jewish life locally, supporting our global Jewish family, and ensuring that our community remains vibrant for generations to come.
This past year has been one of thoughtful planning and purposeful action. Guided by our recently adopted strategic plan, Federation has focused on turning vision into reality. We have embraced a roadmap designed to deepen engagement, expand our reach, invest in leadership development, and enhance the services and programs that connect people to Jewish life. Strategic plans are only meaningful when they inspire action, and we are already beginning to see the impact of this work throughout Delaware.
Every day, I am inspired by the generosity, resilience, and commitment of our community. Together, we are building a Jewish future that honors our traditions while embracing new opportunities for growth and connection.
One of our most significant priorities is strengthening Federation’s presence in southern Delaware. As more Jewish individuals and families make Sussex County and surrounding communities their home, it is essential that Federation grows alongside them. Building relationships, creating meaningful programming, and fostering opportunities for connection downstate are critical to ensuring that every Jew in Delaware feels welcomed, valued, and engaged. Jewish life should not be defined by geography, and we are committed to bringing Federation’s resources, leadership, and support closer to wherever people live.
At the same time, we recognize that the future of our community depends upon developing strong leaders. Every generation inherits the responsibility to sustain Jewish life and identity. Through leadership programs, volunteer opportunities, committee participation, and community engagement initiatives, Federation continues to cultivate emerging leaders who bring fresh perspectives, energy, and ideas. These individuals will help shape our institutions, address future challenges, and ensure that our community remains dynamic and responsive to changing needs.
Connection and engagement remain at the heart of everything we do. In an era when people are searching for belonging, purpose, and authentic relationships, Federation serves as a connector—bringing people together across generations, backgrounds, congregations, and interests. Whether through educational programs, social gatherings, volunteer initiatives, Israel engagement, or philanthropic opportunities, we continue exploring new and innovative ways to meet people where they are and invite them into meaningful Jewish experiences. Strong communities are built one relationship at a time.
Security remains another essential priority. The rise in antisemitism across the United States and around the world reinforces the importance of vigilance and preparedness. Federation’s ongoing investments in community security, partnerships with law enforcement, security training, and protective measures help ensure that our synagogues, schools, agencies, and communal institutions remain safe and resilient. Safeguarding our community is not only about physical security—it is about preserving the confidence and freedom for us to live openly and proudly as Jews.
Our commitment extends beyond Delaware’s borders as well. Through our partnerships and collective efforts, we continue supporting vulnerable Jewish communities around the world, strengthening connections with Israel, and responding to emerging needs wherever they arise. Jewish peoplehood reminds us that we are part of a global family, bound together by shared values, shared history, and mutual responsibility.
As we begin this new year, we also welcome a new cohort of dedicated members to Federation’s Board of Directors. Their willingness to serve reflects the strength of our community and the enduring spirit of volunteer leadership. Alongside our current board members, volunteers, donors, and professional team, they will help guide Federation as we pursue our strategic priorities and embrace new opportunities.
The High Holidays remind us that renewal is possible when vision is matched with action. Together, we can continue building a Jewish community that is strong, secure, inclusive, and connected right here in Delaware, across our nation, and throughout the world.
