ART & CULTURE: Purim Poem

The story of Purim was never a mystery

It’s an important chapter in Jewish history

Some parts are more frightening than confronting a gorilla

Each detail written down in a scroll called “The Megillah.”

It started with Vashti, the dutiful queen

The king felt her beauty deserved to be seen

Invitations were sent for a royal party

Where wine would be served, plus a meal that was hearty.

Brave Vashti, the queen, refused to bow down

and attend the king’s party wearing only her crown!

On hearing the news, the people did cry

When King Achashueros bid Queen Vashti “Goodbye!”

Next came the beauty contest, the part we all know

The king chose a maiden named Esther with a radiant glow

Enter Haman, the villain, determined to kill all the Jews

His evil decree was posted and all Shushan heard the terrible news.

Queen Esther in the palace sat alone and prayed

And with good advice from Mordechai, the sentence was delayed

Evil Haman was hanged on the gallows that he made

The Jewish people of Persia were no longer afraid.

Let’s celebrate with “graggers” our enemy’s defeat

It’s Adar, be happy, have a “hamantash” … let’s eat!
