Camp JCC is a place where traditions meet innovation, creating a space for growth, connection, and lasting memories. From welcoming new leaders like Aaronique Mattis, to fostering creativity through talent shows, and introducing exciting activities like archery and teen trips, Camp JCC continues to evolve while staying true to its mission of enriching lives and strengthening community ties.
In 2014, Aaronique Mattis was adjusting to a new life in America. At just 12 years old, she had spent only a year in the U.S. after immigrating from Jamaica. While browsing a JCC camp brochure with her mom, they were intrigued but hesitant. Reflecting on that time, Aaronique said, “We are from Jamaica, we are from a different culture and a different background. [My mom] didn’t really know or feel comfortable putting me in a different culture when I was also learning the American culture. I didn’t really know much English at the time.”
Ten years later, Aaronique has come full circle, joining Camp JCC as the new camp coordinator for Olim and Chaverim. She now works to create engaging programs for rising first through fourth graders, including specialist activities, visits from special guests, and the much-anticipated annual Maccabi Games. During this week, campers are divided into four color teams to compete in spirited activities like boat races, team spirit competitions, and a wild amazing race. Aaronique is especially excited for the games, sharing, “I love healthy competition. I feel like it’s very good for kids to learn their feelings, build resilience, and work with other kids.”
Another favorite time at camp is talent show week, where campers and counselors collaborate on performances to showcase to the community. Families gather on Fridays with lawn chairs in hand to watch their children’s hard work take center stage. Last summer, rising fourth grader Marley Landwehr and her bunk dressed as Pokémon characters for a choreographed dance to the first Pokémon theme song. Marley recalls, “The talent show was really fun! It helps you get to know people and learn what they can do. I didn’t know the Pokémon song, and it was surprising. We got to express our feelings with our dance moves.”
Camp JCC continually innovates its programming to keep campers engaged. Last summer, archery was introduced, quickly becoming a hit. With six lanes, six targets, and an array of bows and arrows, campers honed their skills in a safe and supportive environment. Alex Pitt, the Chaverim unit head for third and fourth graders, reflected, “For Chaverim, it was a new experience that a lot of kids hadn’t had a chance to do. It brought them out of their comfort zone in a productive way that many campers enjoyed. Two or three even went home and asked for bows for their birthdays.”
At Camp JCC, there are three units: Olim for rising first and second graders, Chaverim for rising third and fourth graders, and Giborim for rising fifth through eighth graders. For the oldest Giborim campers, the end of their camper years can feel bittersweet as they approach their teenage years. To keep these teens connected to the camp community, director Carrie Kee has introduced a new Teen Trips program.
“I hope this is a way for teens to stay connected to Camp JCC,” Carrie said. “Many of them have been a part of the JCC or camp since they were in diapers . . . literally.” The program takes teens on exciting trips from Tuesday through Thursday to destinations like Rehoboth Beach, a Phillies game, a pottery studio, an escape experience in the woods, and a ninja gym.
“We’re currently looking at nine teens for this program, and if interest grows, we’ll explore adding another staff member and adjusting transportation,” Carrie explained. Teens also have the option to extend their program by staying on campus Monday and Friday to enjoy activities like swimming, rock climbing, and archery.
It’s been nearly a decade since Camp JCC last had a Teen Trips program. Whether introducing new initiatives or revitalizing old traditions, the camp is dedicated to creating enriching and memorable experiences for its community. With a strong foundation rooted in tradition and a forward-thinking approach, Camp JCC continues to inspire, connect, and support campers of all ages.
