Lewes, DE artist donates mural inspired by Rachel’s Tomb to Chabad of Southern Delaware

When guests gathered on a cold February evening in a modest community space on Minos Conaway Road in Lewes, DE, they were invited into something quietly meaningful—the unveiling of a new mural created as a gift to Chabad of Southern Delaware.

Local artist Davide Bavati was introduced by host Ellen Powers, who shared how the idea began simply by standing in the newly finished room and feeling that the space needed art. Although Davide had not painted a mural in many years, he felt drawn to the project and saw it as an opportunity to return to mural work in a way that served the community. The scene he chose holds deep personal and spiritual meaning for him—a painting inspired by Rachel’s Tomb, a place he visited many years ago and had long hoped to capture through his art.

During the gathering, the Rabbi shared the story of the biblical matriarch Rachel and spoke about her significance in Jewish tradition, helping guests understand the deeper meaning behind the image now quietly woven into the room. Created entirely as a volunteer gift, the mural was designed to reflect the simplicity of the space while offering a lasting sense of warmth, memory and connection for the growing local Jewish community.
